Obey Road Closed Signs: OPP

The OPP in Huron County are seeing too many drivers who fail to obey road closure signs, and end up getting themselves into dangerous situations.

Shortly after midnight Tuesday, officers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Airport Line near Dashwood Rd. At the time, the road was closed with road closure signs in place.

A driver ignored the sign and proceeded southbound on Airport Line. He was unable to avoid colliding with a large tree that had fallen across the road. There were also downed hydro wires in the immediate area.

The driver was not injured, but his new vehicle was demolished.

A 22-year-old driver from Huron East is now facing charges of careless driving and driving on a closed highway.

"This collision should have never happened," says Huron County OPP Sergeant Kevin Adams. "Quite simply, should you encounter a road closure sign on your travels, obey the sign. Driving on a closed road is not only illegal, it's dangerous. Doing so not only puts you and your passengers at risk, it places emergency responders at risk when they have to come to your aid."

The penalty for driving on a closed road under the Highway Traffic Act has a total payable fine of $110, and upon conviction, drivers will lose three demerit points.
