Bruce Power Signs Biggest Contract For MCR

Bruce Power has signed a $130-million deal for new steam generators for Unit 6 with a joint venture of three suppliers, AECOM, Framatome and Aecon, known as the Steam Generator Replacement Team.

President and CEO Mike Rencheck says the trio of companies forms the perfect entity to tackle a project as big as steam generator replacement.

"We believe they're probably one of the best agencies in the world to be able to do this kind of work, Aecon's been involved here for many, many years in construction at the site," says Rencheck. "The Framatome and AECOM people have been doing steam generator replacements as a business for many years."

Rencheck says the deal could be worth up to $800-million if SGRT is awarded the work for the steam generator replacements for the other five units set for refurbishment.

SGRT executive committee Chair Bob LoCurto says they began design work in December and so far, they are on-time and under budget, with the project set to run into early 2022.

"That's our goal and our mission, our value system lends itself to all those attributes in doing engineering work and construction work," says LoCurto. "We pride ourselves from being 25 years in this particular field of expertise, and we can never let the bar down."

Rencheck says once the existing steam generators are removed from the plant, they will be stored on-site at Ontario Power Generation's Western Waste Management Facility.

He adds Bruce Power has no plans to revisit its shelved plan to ship steam generators to Sweden for recycling, which was met with protests and ultimately cancelled following the refurbishment of units 1 and 2.
