Goderich Becoming Hotbed For Harp Enthusiasts

If you don't play one, you might not know that Goderich has become a centre for harp enthusiasts.

Kimberly Payne, a student at the Huron Harp School, is one local resident who plays the instrument. She says the school started giving harp lessons in 2004 when Sharon Johnston, an accomplished piano teacher in Goderich, went to the Celtic Festival College and fell in love with the harp. She eventually gave up teaching piano to focus on teaching the harp and the Huron Harp School now has close to 40 students ranging in age from 5 to 70.

Payne says some of the best instructors from the world come to teach at the Goderich Celtic Festival.

"We have performed at the Celtic Festival. We have put on a couple of very large performances ourselves. We've travelled to Grand Manan and put on a concert for the community of Grand Manan, we're going again this year," she says.

Payne says they will also be competing this year in the Kiwanis Music Festival later this spring.
