Proposed Sauble Beach Town Square Scaled Back

The proposed town square proposal for Sauble Beach has a new design after the original came in well over-budget.

South Bruce Peninsula council had set a $900,000 budget for the venue, which proposed washrooms, a stage and an observation tower with slide, but cost estimates for the project came in as high as $2-million.

Mayor Janice Jackson says there's no appetite to go beyond their budget, but the revised plans, which removes the tower and slide, are impressive.

"We're going to scale it back because we want to stay within the budget we agreed to, but our architect has come up with an alternative that I think is going to still look spectacular," says Jackson. "We're not going to have the observation tower and the slide, but that's okay."

Jackson says the parcel of municipal land on Lakeshore Blvd., just north of Main St., has existing washrooms, but they're not accessible and can't handle the crowds that flock to Sauble Beach all summer.

She says staff and their consultant will sit down and come up with a more firm price tag for the new design, with hopes of returning to council next month.

Jackson adds they will also seek out private donations, but adds grant money from senior levels of government is not expected.

"We're going to be looking at donors, we haven't even gone anywhere outside of this council chamber to try and find any donated monies," says Jackson. "Certainly, we're not counting on any federal or provincial grants, we haven't received any of those certainly in this last federal and provincial term."
