Durham Library Building Could Undergo A Change

One woman has a plan to revitalize the Durham Library building, which West Grey Council is currently looking into giving a heritage designation.

Elisa Vander Hout envisions a small centre for high school-aged students which teaches alternative skills, such as farming and the tending of crops, survival skills, as well as folk arts.

CAO Laura Johnston says if the building does not receive heritage designation, it will have to go through a public process where any number of uses for the building can be brought forward by the public.

Johnston did mention it is a Carnegie building and makes up part of the historical fabric of Durham.

Vander Hout says her idea is not based solely on this particular building, but noted the location and the setup of the building would be ideal for her vision of an alternative learning centre for high school-aged youth, noting there is not a lot of programs available for students that age in the town of Durham.
