MVCA Says Water Levels Should Peak Wednesday

With water levels quickly rising, many local roads are being closed due to flooding.

Jayne Thompson, the communications director for the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, says despite the rising water, they don't expect it to get as bad as the flood event last June.

"At the moment we don't expect the levels to reach as high as they were in June of last year. I think when we look back over our recent history the levels should be pretty close to what we saw in 2008, it's quite a similar event to that," she says.

Thompson says they expect small pockets to build up in the Wingham and Harriston areas, and they're working with municipalities to monitor those areas. She also says while it is strange to see this combination of melting snow and rain, the rainfall itself isn't that unusual, and they expect levels to keep rising.

"We do expect levels to continue rising," she says. "So we should see the levels peak at some point on Wednesday, but there's still quite a bit of snow out there to melt along with the rain, so we are going to see the levels come up a fair bit more."

Thompson says people should avoid local watercourses because of fast moving and cold water, and that drivers should be aware of the roads and not try to drive through flooded over waterways.
