Cowbell Brewery Gets Zoning Approval For Large Scale Events

Central Huron has approved a request from Cowbell Brewery for a temporary zoning bylaw that would them to host large musical events or sporting events outside of their building.

Cowbell had asked for a three-year approval and some councillors wanted to cut that in half, to 18 months, but council approved the bylaw for two years and stipulated the brewery could host three private events and two municipally significant events each year. The biggest concern for most councillors was noise levels and what control the municipality had if the noise continued past the curfew outlined in the bylaw.

Mayor Jim Ginn explained Cowbell would have to apply to council for each exemption and if the previous event didn't work out council would not be obligated to approve the next one. Ginn also pointed out the proposed bylaw is a learning curve for both Cowbell and the municipality and they both want to see it succeed so they'll together to try and make that happen.

“Cowbell has requested a temporary zoning bylaw which would allow them to hold large musical events or sporting events outside and we did approve for a two-year period up to three of their private events and up to two municipally significant events.”

“We see this as a bit of a learning curve, both for them and for us. Obviously we don't have lot of large musical festivals in Huron County so we'll certainly keep an eye on it and if it doesn't meet our requirements then they may not be given and exemption for another event.”
