Be Wary Of Door-To-Door Service Offers

Provincial police are urging local residents to use caution when dealing with unsolicited service offers at the door.

Earlier this week, three men showed up at a residence on Proton St. N in Dundalk, asking to be allowed in to check pipes in the basement for water filters. The homeowner was suspicious and turned them away before calling police.

The suspects -- two Caucasian and one with darker skin colour -- were said to be in their 20s. One was wearing a silver-coloured winter jacket with a fur hood. Two of them were carrying clip boards. Police searched the area, but were not able to find the trio.

The OPP recommend that if someone comes to your door, ask to see some identification. And remember, you do not have to let them in -- and they must leave when asked.

If you are interested in what a door-to-door salesperson has to offer, take the time to find out about their business and their offer before you pay out any money.

You can contact the Competition Bureau at www.competitionbureau.gc.ca (1-800-348-5358) or the Canadian Council of Better Business Bureaus at www.ccbbb.ca if you are unsure about a seller that comes to your door.

If you believe you are a victim of a fraud, contact your local police service.
