Shortage Of Home Care Staff Province-Wide

The CEO of the Huron-Perth Healthcare Alliance says moving people who should be in long-term care facilities out of hospitals, continues to be a serious problem throughout the province.

Andrew Williams says the province is taking steps to ease the situation, but the real problem is the shortage of personal support workers.

Williams says the province is providing six additional beds to the Healthcare Alliance, but it remains to be seen how much impact that will have while there's a shortage of home care staff.

He adds they're going to have to be creative in getting those personal support workers to move to Huron and Perth because they're competing against the rest of the province, so they're going to have to give them a very compelling reason to re-locate.

"When you don't have those individuals on the ground in the community, it impacts our ability to discharge patients to home care, so that's having a material effect across the province now and there's a number of strategies that are being looked at, but it is a concerns for us as we get into the winter and flu season," says Williams.
