Port Elgin Building Damaged By Fire

A fire in a vacant building shut down a portion of downtown Port Elgin Monday morning.

The Saugeen Shores Fire Department responding just before 8:30am to a two-storey building on Goderich St., where fire crews found a blaze in the main floor of the building, which had spread to the upstairs.

Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says nobody was injured in the fire, which closed a two-block stretch of Goderich St. for about two hours.

He says the building has had many renovations and additions over the years, and that made fighting the fire more difficult.

"A very challenging fire, as you know, it's cold this morning and things freeze up but also, it's got a lot of renovations and different floor areas, so firefighters did their best to get to the fire," says Eagleson.

Eagleson says an investigation into the cause will start right away, but adds the fire is not considered suspicious.
