Grey County Woman Loses $12K Over Contact Made On Facebook

A Grey County woman learned Monday she was the victim on an online "emergency scam."

The 74-year-old woman contacted the Owen Sound Police Service after the demands of a person she had befriended on Facebook became too extreme.

The woman told police that the individual claimed to have gone to France in order to work and had his supplies held by customs.

Starting in August, she was asked to send him money on several occasions. Each time, she was instructed to send money to different people at different locations.

She sent a total of $12,000 over a period of several months.

On Monday she was asked to send $75,000, and that's when she contacted police for advice.

If you want to report a fraud or if you need further information contact the Owen Sound Police Service at (519) 376-1234 or The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre Toll Free at 1-888-495-8501.
