OFL President Joins Picket Line At Georgian College Monday

Ontario Federation of Labour President Chris Buckley joined picketers in front of Georgian College in Owen Sound Monday.

He came with a group from the Grey Bruce Labour Council that turned out in a show of support.

The professors and instructors at the Owen Sound campus are among approximately 12,000 college employees across the province who have been on strike now for a week.

Local union steward Jesse Wilkinson says OPSEU members are most concerned about job security. Up to 80% of professors and instructors work on a part time basis. Many have to re-apply for their jobs every semester.

Buckley says that's unfair for the workers, the students they teach as well as all precarious employees in the province.

"So I applaud the members of OPSEU for drawing a line in the sand and for the parents and the students out there worried about the tuition, the lost time in classrooms, these members of OPSEU are taking the fight on for our young people," says Buckley.

No new talks have been scheduled in the contract dispute.
