Central Huron Council Approves Support Of International HIV-AIDS Awareness Day

Central Huron Council has approved a request from the Huron County Health Unit to support International HIV-AIDS Awareness Day, which falls on December 1st.

Senior Public Health Nurse Shelly Spencer explains their request to council was that they be allowed to tie red scarves on the lamp poles along the main street to acknowledge and raise awareness of HIV and AIDS and in doing so generate conservations about prevention. Spencer says the wool has been donated and they have an eager team of volunteer knitters and crocheters who have knitted the scarves and there will be a message on each scarf and people are encouraged, on December 1st, to take a scarf from the lamp pole and take it home to give to someone they care about or keep it for themselves. Council approved the request.

“It's one specific day where we like to take the opportunity to talk about HIV and AIDS and try to raise some awareness locally just about how this is affecting people's lives.”

“We have had donated wool and keen knitters and crocheters who are quite happy to knit to support this cause and those scarves will be out and people can take the scarves and take them home and give them to people that they like or keep them for themselves.”
