Millions Needed To Upgrade Historic North Huron Museum Building

A Goderich architectural firm is recommending $3.8-million in building improvements for the North Huron Museum in Wingham.

In a Building Condition Assessment Report, Allan Avis Architects endorsed almost $1.5-million in general, mechanical and electrical systems, including an air-handling system throughout the building, and new insulation for the walls and ceilings.

The assessment was originally to be broken into two parts, but when the firm's estimate was so significant, staff cut out the second portion of the study until they received direction from council.

The report further noted that the cost estimates in the report are very conceptual and preliminary, and are not intended to be comprehensive.

Councillor Brock Vodden was very vocal about keeping a museum, saying people see value in remembering the past, and that museums aren't put up to make revenue. Vodden made clear to BlackburnNews.com that the decision on the future of the current museum building is ultimately up to the North Huron citizens.

He said the worst thing they could do is tear the building down, and said this would be a sign that "the town of Wingham is gone."

Councillor Trevor Seip hoped council would set priorities before dealing with this issue, saying local residents are looking to members of council to decide what should be maintained, and what buildings are unsustainable.
