Owen Sound Opens New Wastewater Treatment Plant

Owen Sound celebrated the grand opening of its new Wastewater Treatment Plant Tuesday.

Plant upgrades have been underway since August of 2014, and represent the single largest project in city history with a construction value in excess of $48-million.

The project included changing the plant from a primary to seconday level of treatment, allowing for additional biological treatment, filtration and disinfection of wastewater before it is discharged back into the environment in Owen Sound Bay.

Owen Sound now meets the Government of Canada’s Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations.

The federal and provincial governments each gave $15-million, while the city pledged $18-million to cover the balance of construction costs.
