Central Huron Mayor Not Told About National Defence Exercises In Municipality

There appears to be some communications issues between the province and the municipality of Central Huron.

BalckburnNews.com has been told the loud bangs heard by some Goderich and Central Huron residents earlier this week were explosions created by the Department of National Defence, as they conducted some military exercises at the former Bluewater Centre for Young Offenders.

Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn says the municipality was notified of what was going on by the OPP early Wednesday afternoon, and he was told later in the day.

Ginn says he understands the province gave the Department of National Defence permission to use the property and the OPP were notified. But he says no one bothered to alert the municipality that residents might hear some loud noises over the next couple of days.

“It certainly would have been nice to hear about it," says Ginn. "I think it was an oversight on behalf of the province. They had given the military permission to use that site and had apparently informed the OPP of that but for whatever reason didn't notify the municipality.”

*CORRECTION: On September, 2017, BlackburnNews.com incorrectly reported in a headline that mayor of Bluewater was involved in the interview regarding the Department of National Defence at the Bluewater Centre for Young Offenders. In fact it was the mayor of Central Huron. The correction has now been made in the above article.
