Canadian Plowing Championships Underway Near Walkerton

Competitors from across Canada are in fields near Walkerton participating in the Canadian Plowing Championships.

Fifteen plowmen from Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick have won their provincial championships. They compete in three categories -- senior conventional plows, senior reversible plows and junior conventional plows.

Event chair Tom Murdock says competitors are judged on a variety of criteria, like straightness and firmness of the furrow.

"It's a skill, an art, call it what you will. We think it's the Olympics of agriculture really," says Murdock.

He says the winners in the two senior divisions go on to the world championships in Germany next year. Murdock says those who have been there in the past find it an honour.

"These boys said it's a very humbling experience when they get to the worlds, to stand there with your flag behind you. There's about 30 countries at every one of these world competitions," he says.

The Canadian Plowing Championships event is on Bruce Rd. 19 north of Walkerton. It continues through Saturday with winners announced at a banquet in Elmwood Saturday evening.
