Huron East councillors will meet again in two weeks to discuss reducing the size of council.
"There is merit in reducing the size of council but this bylaw would actually remove the deputy mayor's position from the voter's list and the voters would not be able to pick who becomes deputy mayor of the municipality," says Mayor Bernie MacLellan.
He says the deputy mayor would be selected by the successful candidates for council seats.
Eliminating the position would save the cost of one councillor and result in an odd number of councillors, which would reduce the chances of tie votes in council.
Huron East council consists of two councillors for each of the five wards. An earlier vote to cut that to one councillor per ward was defeated because council felt there was enough work in each ward to keep two councillors busy and any financial savings would not justify the reduction in councillors.
Tuesday night's vote was deferred because Deputy Mayor Joe Steffler was not able to attend the meeting and he had asked to speak on the issue. The next meeting is September 5.
