PWU Members Support Fairy Lake Restoration

Another donation has been made toward replanting around Fairy Lake in Southampton.

SauGreen For The Environment is one of the charitable groups to receive funding from the Power Workers Union for the next phase of the rehabilitation.

The Power Workers Union is contributing $5,000 to the replanting project.

"The Power Workers Union takes nominations from its members and selects good projects to fund every year," says Jack Kelly of the PWU. "This project stood out due to the extensive community collaborations and necessity due to the dramatic cutting of so many ash trees, and we are happy to be a partner in restoring this Nature Park.”

Over 500 trees were cut down last winter due to the emerald ash borer infestation.

"We are hoping to continue with the environmental remediation of Fairy Lake and its waters up and down stream to really engage all ages and enhance our natural environment," says Victoria Serda, project manager of SauGreen. "We are grateful for our newest sponsor, the PWU, which will allow us to leverage funding and services from public and private partnerships to revitalize the park with less cost to the taxpayer and more community benefits."

There will be public meetings this fall and winter, and SauGreen hopes to do more planting next spring, possibly in Matheson Park along the fence to GC Huston school.
