Safe Harbour Run Sunday In Bayfield

Organizers are expecting over 200 runners and walkers for this Sunday's Safe Harbour Run in Bayfield.

The race started in 2009 as a fundraiser for the Huron Women's Shelter, but had to be cancelled last year due to a shortage of volunteers.

Blue Bayfield stepped up this year to manage the run.  They plan to pass along 80% of the proceeds to the Women's Shelter and keep 20% for environmental projects in the Bayfield area.

Spokesperson Ray Letheran says Sunday's race will have a five and 10 km run and they've also added a 2 km race as well as a walk and pole-walking.

Runners can register and get more information from the Safe Harbour Run web site, and if they register before midnight this Thursday, the registration fee is cut in half.

"There's both a 5 and a 10 K run and it's sponsored by Runners Choice in London and it's part of what's called a run-pikers series – it's a series of races throughout Southwestern Ontario that offers pretty substantial prize money for people who can collect enough points over the season," explains Letheran.  "We've added a couple of elements to ours for people who don't feel capable of running five K or ten K on that particular day and so we have a two-K and in addition to that, because Bayfield is a crazy pole-walking town we have added walking and pole-walking to the event."
