Port Elgin Homeowner Treated For Smoke Inhalation

A Port Elgin home sustained minor damage after fire broke out Sunday evening.

Firefighters from both Port Elgin and Southampton stations responded to the Bruce St. home just before 6pm, and found a fire burning in the garage area of the home.

Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says a quick response allowed fire crews to keep the fire from spreading.

"Both Saugeen Shores stations responded, contained the fire to the garage area of the home, with no extension to the roof or the residential area of the home," says Eagleson.

The owner of the home was taken to hospital in Southampton for observation due to smoke inhalation.

Eagleson says the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been notified and will begin an investigation Monday morning into the cause of the fire.

He says despite the involvement of OFM, the fire is not considered suspicious at this point.

"We call [the OFM] on all these, we're going to wait, they'll attend [Monday] morning and we'll begin a thorough investigation," says Eagleson.
