Changes To Grey County Warden Elections Considered

Anybody in Grey County could run for warden if a proposal before Grey County Council passes.

Council's Committee of the Whole passed a motion to consider electing the warden at large for a four year term. It would likely be on the municipal election ballot. Town of Blue Mountains Mayor John McKean has made the proposal. He says the warden's job has become full time and it would be an excellent move to open it up to anyone.

"You could get business people that wanted to show an interest in it and politicians or even retired politicians that don't want to have the work load of doing your municipal stuff plus being the warden of Grey County," says McKean.

McKean's idea is to have the change in place by the end of this year so it would be in effect for the 2018 municipal election. Some councillors expressed reservations there's enough time for public input and staff reports.

To make it official the proposal to consider electing a warden at large still has to be passed at a full Grey County Council meeting.
