Port Elgin House Fire Quickly Contained

The Saugeen Shores Fire Department was called out Monday morning after a fire broke out in a Port Elgin home.

Crews responded just after 10:30am to the two-storey home on Waterloo St., where firefighters quickly contained a fire in a second storey bedroom.

Witness Ryan Brown was passing by when he noticed the smoke, but says nobody was home at the time.

"I saw smoke coming out of the roof of the house, went and banged on the door, yelling at the door, didn't hear anything, called 911," says Brown. "Then I went around the back of the house, the door was wide open, went in yelling 'Anybody in here? Anybody in here?'"

Brown adds that police officers from the Saugeen Shores Police Service arrived moments later and found two people who appeared to be living in a shed or small building detached from the home.

Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says the first crew into the home was able to quickly extinguish the fire, containing it to the bedroom.  He says the fire is not considered suspicious and a cause is currently under investigation, adding he initially estimates damage to the home at about $50,000.

"The structure has basic water and smoke damage to one room on the upper floor, and the rest of the structure has light smoke damage," says Eagleson.

Eagleson confirms two people were home in a secondary dwelling on the property at the time, and they cooperated with firefighters.
