More Pressure on Grey County Council to Save Grey Gables

"Save Grey Gables" is the rallying cry for plenty of people in the Markdale area.   Over a hundred people turned out to a meeting Tuesday to try to come up with a last minute strategy to influence Grey County Council.

Council is to take a final vote on the issue Thursday.   If the motion passes, Grey Gables would close as a county run facility.  It would be amalgamated with a new long term care home to be built in Durham.

Grey Highlands Mayor Paul McQueen says they're hoping to amend the motion for a six month deferral on the vote to allow further study.   He says the issue has dividing County Council. "How are we gonna deal with other issues at county council if this is one that's really entrenched. We need to get through this, come up with a solution that works for the people of Grey County and the people who are going to be in need of the care," say McQueen.

Markdale's Michelle Patey says closing the facility leaves eastern Grey County seriously under serviced for long term care. "We need to keep the long term care here. Anyone who thinks about closing a long term care facility instinctively thinks that's cuckoo, that's crazy and that's wrong because it is. We can do better with the money that they want to spend," says Patey.

People are urged to telephone, email or otherwise let Grey County councillors know their feelings on closing Grey Gables.   The vote comes up at Grey County Council Thursday.
