Local Home Construction And Renovations Remain Strong

Meaford’s building industry is as strong as ever.

In his latest report to council, Chief Building Officer Rick Carefoot stated that in May alone his department issued 40 permits, with a total value of $10.5 million.

That's more than three times the $3.2 million in building value for May 2016.   Of the 40 permits issued last month, 11 were for new homes.

Deputy mayor Harley Greenfield was astonished that the total value of permits issued for renovations and additions last month was $4.1 million.    In May of last year, permits for renovations and additions totalled only $30 thousand.

Another local hot-spot is Wellington North.

New construction is running well ahead of historical highs for the first four months of the year.

To the end of April, $23.6 million in permits were issued, compared to a ten-year average of $9 million.

Part of this year’s jump is due to the start of a new multi-million-dollar long term care facility in Mount Forest.
