Former Huron County Educator/Historian Wins Carnochan Award

A former Huron County educator and long-time historian has been recognized by the Ontario Historical Society.

The society announced recently that Paul Carrol is one two recipients of the 2016 Carnochan Award for his many years of service to the heritage community.

Carroll has a long list of achievements in heritage. One of the first came when he was a very young reeve of Goderich in 1970.

He says county council wanted to demolish part of the Historic Gaol. and he was the only one at Goderich council who opposed it. The community rallied around the jail and it stands today as the only federally designated historic site in the county.

Carroll says a second controversial project was the designation and restoration of the Van Egmond House, because at that time, it was not appropriate to honour someone like Anthony Van Egmond who had been involved in the rebellion of 1837.

Carroll says one of his biggest disappointments is his failure to save the Marine Museum in Goderich, but he also hopes that effort isn't over yet.
