New Police Building Given The OK From Saugeen Shores Council

Saugeen Shores council appears to be settling on a new build for its police service.

Council voted 9-0 Monday night to proceed with plans for a new police building at an estimated cost of $6.8-million, with tentative plans to construct the facility on MacKenzie Rd. in the Port Elgin Industrial Park.

The new building would replace the existing 17-year-old police building, which was built nearly half the recommended size, has been plagued by structural issues, and would have cost nearly the same amount to renovate.

Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau is chair of the police services board and says now that council has picked its direction, they need to firm up the price tag and finalize details.

"We need to get some better tender numbers and more details about the exact location, and site plans and all those kinds of things, so there's a lot of decisions yet to make," says Charbonneau. "But the most important decision I think is made, we're now heading down the path toward a new build in the industrial park in Port Elgin."

The estimated $6.8-million price tag would cost Saugeen Shores taxpayers an additional $63 per year for the next 20 years.
