30th Anniversary For Law Enforcement Torch Run

The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and the OPP in Huron County want to make the milestone significant.

Special Olympians, police officers, family members, friends and community supporters will run, walk, stroll together next Tuesday in an effort to promote awareness and raise money for Special Olympics Ontario.

The Torch Run starts at 9am at the Wingham OPP detachment office. The run will go through Wingham, and end at the south end mall.

Participants will then be transported to Blyth, Clinton and Goderich where they will complete another run-walk-or-stroll in each of those communities.

Free bus transportation will be provided from Goderich to Wingham for the start. Participants are asked to meet at the Goderich OPP Detachment office on Courthouse Square just before the 8am departure time.

After completing the final leg in Goderich, participants and supporters will take part in the 30th anniversary celebration barbeque.  It's scheduled to take place around noon at McGee Motors on Suncoast Dr. E in Goderich.

"The support we have seen from our local towns and villages has been just phenomenal," says Huron OPP Torch Run Coordinator Sergeant Russ Nesbitt.  "This event is so much more than just a run. Knowing our athletes are accepted and included is so important. I'm very proud to be a champion of this amazing event and organization."

The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch run is a community-based event that sees the "Flame of Hope" carried across the province by members of law enforcement agencies.

Since the first Law Enforcement Torch Run was established in Canada in 1987, over $35-million has been raised in Ontario.

Cash is accepted on the day of the event. Cheques can be made out to "Ontario Special Olympics."
