Private Tour Boat Approved For Port Elgin Harbour

There will be an added attraction at the Port Elgin harbour this summer.

Private tour boat operator Mike Brill will be setting up in the harbour, offering one-to-two hour cruises on Lake Huron, potentially as early as this month.

Saugeen Shores Director of Community Services Jayne Jagelewski says the municipality has arranged for docking space for the 46 ft boat, though she points out that's the extent of the municipality's involvement.

She says tours will run only on weekends at first, with plans to increase the number of excursions as the summer tourism season arrives.

"As soon as the weather starts to perk up a bit and get a little bit warmer, he's ready to go," says Jagelewski.  "[Brill] would like to start about mid-May to the end of May, and again, it's dependent on weather, so you could start to see the vessel in [the harbour] in the next week, week and a half."

The tour boat will be able to carry up to 12 passengers and three crew members. Jagelewski says Transport Canada will be in charge of enforcing safety regulations.

"They're governed by Transport Canada, so obviously regulations are extremely stringent on training, on when he can take his boat out, to what he needs to provide on his vessel, as well," says Jagelewski.

Jagelewski says Brill has been a captain on the Great Lakes since 2009.
