The "Building Bridges to our Future" campaign held a very successful Saturday night gala at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Wingham.
The event raised $54,000 towards playground equipment upgrades at Maitland River Elementary School. The event put the campaign over halfway towards the goal of $100,000.
The playground is designed for accessibility for everyone, including students with mobility issues, as well as seniors who may want to get on the equipment themselves so they can take part as children play.
The gala featured Biathlete Erin Yungblut as guest speaker. Yungblut, who is from Wroxeter, is currently training-and-competing for Canada and hopes to represent her country at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.
The group will host a "Ford Drive Event" in the parking lot of the North Huron Wescast complex on Saturday, May 27 where they hope to raise an additional $6,000 to go towards the project.
That event is in partnership with Leslie Motors, and will feature both a barbeque and a "mini-trunk sale," which is a garage sale out of the back of people's vehicles.
