Solar Panels Will Help Power Steve Kerr Memorial Complex

The new Steve Kerr Memorial complex in Listowel will be getting some assistance from the sun.

North Perth Parks and Rec Director Steve Hardie says the municipality is investing in making sure the new building is environmentally efficient.

"One of the things we've been working on with the complex from day one, is trying to incorporate as many green initiatives into the complex as we can," he says. "The second part of that is trying to produce energy through solar panels."

Hardie says the roof mounted panels will help the facility be as green as possible, and generate a lot of energy for the building.

"We're looking at a net metering type approach, where we can produce approximately 65% of the power that's utilized within the facility," he says. "So in the summer months we can produce a lot of electricity through the panels, we receive credits for those kilowatts produced, and we can use those credits in the winter."

The cost of the installation and purchase of the panels is around $570,000.

Hardie says the payback period is very good, and in the long run, North Perth will save a significant amount with the panels.
