Municipal Facilities In South Bruce Peninsula Not Being Used Enough

A South Bruce Peninsula councillor is looking for answers as to why many municipal facilities are being under-used.

Matt Jackson says he was alarmed by some of the booking statistics presented to council, including the numbers for the Wiarton Arena and Community Centre.

For the period between October 1 and December 31 last year, Jackson says the arena ice was booked just 44% of the time it was open, and that's too low for his liking.

He says they need to look at their pricing structure as a starting point, suggesting discounting rental fees as one possibility.

It currently costs $137, including taxes, to rent the ice for an hour on weekends and weekday evenings, while the price drops to $91 per hour during weekday mornings and afternoons.

Jackson says the arena is staffed and the equipment has to run even when the ice is not booked, so dropping the cost of a rental and bringing in some revenue is better than none at all.

He says they also need to look at programming during off-peak hours.

"I think it's up to the municipality to take the lead through our rec department and put together some programming that's attractive, that's unique," says Jackson. "Maybe it's not your typical public skating, maybe look at doing some additional leagues, there's lots of solutions out there and we just have to look outside of the box."
