Goderich Township De-amalgamation Petition In Limbo

The de-amalgamation of Goderich Township from Central Huron has taken a lot longer than some members of the Huron-Perth Landowners Association were hoping it would.

Former association president Dave Hemingway says he has no idea what is holding up the process.

Cindy Moyer was the association president in November of 2014 when a petition that was signed by 60-70% of Goderich Township residents asking to de-amalgamate was presented to the attorney general at Queen's Park.

Moyer stated at that time the attorney general was obligated under a piece of 400-year-old British legislation, to present the Petition of Right to the lieutenant governor who was required to announce “Let Right be Done,” and the de-amalgamation would be granted.

Hemingway says the petition was passed on to the province's legal department, but he has no idea what's happened to it since then.

He adds he's not aware of any current attempt to move the de-amalgamation forward and the Landowners Association is now busy with legal battles against wind energy companies.

On November 27, 2014 - the day the petition was presented at Queen's Park - Moyer was not given a date for a response to the petition but she did ask that it be done very early in the new year.

Both Moyer and Hemingway maintain the Petition of Right is an Imperial Statute that is part of the Canadian Constitution.
