Quick Response Prevents Spread Of Norovirus At St. Marys Hospital

The CEO of the Huron-Perth Healthcare Alliance credits staff, patients and their families for responding to and controlling a Norovirus outbreak at St. Marys General Hospital.

Andrew Williams says a few patients and more than ten staff members were recently affected, but staff quickly recognized what they were dealing with and contained it.

Williams adds with amount of traffic through a hospital, even though you have several systems in place to reduce the number outbreaks, it's impossible to eliminate them.

He says the best you can hope to do is contain them, and that was done very quickly in St. Marys.

Williams credits the housekeeping staff, infection control team, nurses, physicians, patients and families for responding quickly, and that allowed them to reopen the hospital fairly quickly.
