Vet Clinics Helping With Lyme Disease Surveillance in Grey-Bruce

The Grey Bruce Health Unit is getting help in the battle against Lyme Disease.

Six area vet clinics are helping the Health Unit's surveillance program by submitting ticks found on animals.     In the past they've only had ticks submitted that were found on humans.

A certain kind of tick can carry Lyme Disease which can sometimes be serious or even fatal to humans.

The health unit's Bob Hart says they've doubled the number of ticks found with the help of the vets. "And it's really helped us improve our surveillance this year so that we're getting a better handle on the distribution of black legged ticks and therefore the potential risk of human lyme disease in the area," says Hart.

Of all the ticks submitted in 2016, none tested positive for Lyme Disease, but there have been positive results in years past.

Hart is hoping to get more vet clinics involved in the coming year.
