Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame Names Votto as Tip O'Neill Winner

Joey Votto is being honoured with the Tip O'Neill award from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Marys.

It's the sixth time in seven years Votto has won the award. In a release the Hall says its given to "the Canadian player judged to have excelled in individutal achievement while adhering to baseball's highest ideals."

The shrine considers things like on-the-field performance, contributions to the team, community and charitable endeavors. It also considers fan voting.

Votto is a first baseman with the Cincinnati Reds and had a .326 batting average and was the third-best in the National League. He also became one of just seven players in MLB history to hit over.400 after the All-Star break in a season.

Off the field, Votto is involved with the Reds Community Fund, a charity that is dedicated to helping young people. He makes regular visits to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Centre to meet with patients and staff.

He also contributed to the construction of the 33,000 square foot training centre at the P & G Cincinnati MLB Urban Youth Academy.
