Flu Arrives Early In Parts Of Midwestern Ontario

The first flu case of the season has been confirmed in Huron County.  Perth County had confirmed cases last week.

Public Health Nurse Susan Hart says they don't usually start seeing cases peak until around Christmas time.  Last year it was late January and into February, so this is definitely earlier than normal.

Hart says generally about 30% of Huron County residents get their flu shots and it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to start working.

She adds other things people can do to complement the protection they get from the flu shot include frequent hand washing, staying home if you're not feeling well, as frequent washing of things like door knobs that are handled often by other people.

Hart adds flu shots are offered by most pharmacies as well as at health care provider offices.
