Public Meeting Thursday On Howson Dam Future

A Wingham-based group is trying to enlist public support in it's campaign to see improvements to the Howson Dam and pond.

A Class Environmental Assessment of the Howson Dam in Wingham is underway.  The aging dam and bridge structure over the Maitland River have deteriorated to the point that their future is uncertain.

The E-A will consider long-term alternatives for the dam, including natural, social, economic and cultural factors.

Part of the E-A process is a public meeting this Thursday at the Municipal Offices in Wingham from 6:00 to 8:00.

The meeting will feature a presentation at 7:00 o'clock on the Class Environmental Assessment process. There will be an opportunity for public comment as well.

Preliminary alternatives identified at this time through the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment include: 1. Rebuild the dam and bridge structure and restore the dam headpond to its former level. 2. Rehabilitate the existing dam and bridge; maintain the water level in headpond at current (lower) level. 3. Rehabilitate the existing dam and bridge; restore water level in the headpond to original (higher) level. 4. Decommission (remove) the dam. 5. Do nothing. Leave the dam as it is.
