Grey Bruce Doctor Wants Safer Roads

A doctor with the Grey Bruce Public Health Unit is working to make our roads safer.

Dr. Ian Arra is participating in a province wide initiative to reduce highway fatalities and injuries.

In a presentation to the Grey Bruce Board of Health, Arra notes vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injury related death for children and an average of 13 people die on Grey Bruce roads very year. Arra believes it's possible to reduce that to zero.

"I'm quite a believer that we can enhance the safety on our roads. Every death on the roads should be preventable and if we do things right, and that's the way we usually do things in Canada, the death rate should be zero," says Dr. Arra.

Arra points to European cities that focus on slower speeds, seat belts, and harsher penalties for distracted and drinking drivers. He says fatalities in Europe have been reduced dramatically.
