Local Vehicle-Deer Collisions On The Rise Again

OPP officers in Perth County were dispatched to five vehicle-deer collisions between 6pm and 7pm last night.

Police say the drivers were shook-up but not hurt.  In several cases, damage to the vehicles was extensive.  Some of the deer were killed, others took off into bushy areas.

In Grey County, OPP officers have responded to seven collisions involving deer in the last 24 hours.

Since November 1, they've responded to a total of 36 deer-vehicle collisions; that's on top of a total of 38 that were reported in Grey County in October.

Drivers are warned that the peak times for deer movement are between 5am and 7am in the morning, and 5pm and 11pm at night.

But police also caution that an encounter with a deer can occur at any time, and in just about any location.

If you have struck a deer:

Stay calm and pull your vehicle off to the side of the road as far as possible.

  • Put on four-way flashers.
  • Be visible and be aware of other vehicles when outside of your vehicle.
  • Call 911 if you or your passenger is injured.
  • If the dollar value of the damage exceeds $2,000 you are required to report the collision to police as soon as possible. Call the non-emergency line at 1-888-310-1122.
  • If you would like to keep the dead deer, you are required to submit a notice of possession. This can be completed on line at www.ontario.ca or by visiting a Service Ontario full service location.
