Huron East Mayor Calls For Service Review

The Mayor of Huron East is asking his council to take a look at the services the municipality delivers to see if they can't be delivered more efficiently by an outside source.

Bernie MacLellan points out between 2003 and 2013 taxes in Huron East increased by 300 per cent and he suspects that number will be closer to 400 per cent now with the cuts in funding from the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund.

"With those kinds of numbers," MacLellan tells CKNX News. "If council isn't willing to take a look at some of the services we're providing, and deciding what ones need to be cut out and can be provided by someone else other than the municipality, I think it would be a shame."

MacLellan explains staff will offer some comparisons with other municipalities at the next council meeting and council will decide where to go from there. MacLellan contends the same services have been delivered in the same way over several years and he questions whether some of those services could be delivered more efficiently or even discontinued.

MacLellan also suggests the review be conducted by an outside auditor, but he adds he's not sure council would support that.
