SIU clears OPP in stolen vehicle crash

The province's police watchdog has ended an investigation involving a 28-year-old man who was injured in a stolen vehicle rollover in Norfolk County last month.

Norfolk OPP were called about a vehicle that was stolen in Delhi early on August 8. An officer spotted the stolen vehicle in Simcoe and attempted to stop it at around 9:10 a.m. The vehicle sped away from the officer, who did not give chase.

Two other officers saw the vehicle but did not pursue it.

Roughly 30 minutes later, the vehicle went airborne, crashed into a ditch, and rolled several times at the intersection of County Road 23 and County Road 45. It was ten minutes before police arrived on scene.

The driver was taken to hospital with multiple severe injuries.

As police had interacted with the vehicle a short time before the crash, the Special Investigations Unit was called in to probe the incident.

“The evidence is clear that no police officer caused or contributed to the collision involving the man. As such, I have terminated the investigation into this incident,” said SIU Director Tony Loparco in a statement.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
