Trump's Campaign Chair Found Guilty, Lawyer Makes Plea Deal

Two former members of the U.S. president's inner circle are now facing the music for a number of financial crimes.

Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, was found guilty on Tuesday of five counts of tax fraud, one charge of hiding foreign bank accounts and two counts of bank fraud.  The judge in the case declared a mistrial for ten other financial charges after the jurors were unable to reach a verdict.

The former campaign chair has been in jail since June.  Manafort's bail was also revoked after he was accused of witness tampering.

This was the first case brought to trial by special counsel Robert Mueller as part of an ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.  Manafort still faces a second set of criminal charges in a Washington, DC federal court relating to foreign lobbying and money laundering.

On the same day, Trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen plead guilty to eight criminal counts that included tax fraud, false statements to a bank and campaign finance violations tied to his work for Trump.

Cohen surrendered to the FBI earlier on Tuesday.

The investigation into Cohen was initially referred to the Southern District of New York by special counsel Mueller's team.

According to CNN, Cohen stated in a plea deal that "in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office" he kept information that would have been harmful to the "candidate" and the campaign from becoming public.

Part of the plea deal includes jail time and a substantial fine, which will be determined at a sentencing hearing for Cohen on December 12.

The criminal cases against both Cohen and Manafort continue to give credence to Mueller's investigation, which Trump has repeatedly referred to as "rigged" or a "witch hunt". A number of Trump's allies in the White House have also called on the special counsel to wrap up the investigation.
