Swastika Painted On Public School

A swastika and other graffiti spray painted on the back exterior wall of a public school in Old North London will be removed by end of day Monday.

The Thames Valley District School Board was alerted to the vandalism at St. George's Public School on Sunday, after a picture of the black swastika was posted to a Facebook group.

"Our school board really values and embraces our diversity and these type of acts are not representative of the culture that we have built and continue to work towards," said Matt Reid, school board chair. "I think it is really unfortunate that someone would ever stoop to spray painting such a horrible image because it really does hurt a lot of communities, especially the Jewish community in this particular case."

The graffiti went unnoticed on the school for more than two weeks. It wasn't until a neighbour took to social media to bring it to the school board's attention that officials at the Waterloo St. school even realized it was there.

"Because this wasn't on an eye level area, it was up above on the roof at the back of the school, staff didn't know it was there for some time," said Reid, who also stated he would be investigating how someone was able to access that area of the building.

London police have been contacted about the vandalism and are investigating.

As of Monday, all gates around the fenced-in playground have been padlocked to limit access to the area.
