Third EMDC Inmate Death Added To Inquest

A third inmate has been added to a coroner's inquest into deaths at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC).

Regional Supervising Coroner for West Region Dr. Rick Mann announced the joint inquest into the deaths of Floyd Deleary, Justin Thompson, and Murray James Davis on Tuesday. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

When originally announced last August, the inquest was only going to examine the deaths of Deleary and Thompson.

It is believed all three men died from suspected drug overdoses.

Deleary died August 23, 2015 after being found in medical distress in his cell at the provincial jail on Exeter Rd. He was 39-years-old. Thompson, who was 27-years-old, died in hospital on October 31, after being transferred from the EMDC. Davis, 24, died August 17, 2017 while in custody.

According to a release from the coroner’s office, the inquest will examine the events surrounding all three deaths. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

Dr. David Eden will preside as inquest coroner and Laura Casey and Julian Roy will be counsel to the coroner.

A date and location for the joint inquest have yet to be released.
