Husband and Wife Killed in Norfolk Crash

Charges are pending in a two-vehicle crash southeast of Tillsonburg that claimed the lives of a husband and wife.

Norfolk OPP were called to McDowell Rd. West in North Walsingham around 7:39pm on Wednesday after a pickup truck collided with an SUV.

Investigators determined the eastbound SUV was attempting to turn left into the driveway of a home when it was hit by an eastbound pickup that was trying to pass. The force of the collision sent both vehicles into the ditch.

The driver of the SUV, 25-year-old Maria Klassen of Norfolk County, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, 26-year-old Abram Enns Klassen of Norfolk County, was airlifted to Hamilton hospital. He has since died from his injuries.

The 23-year-old male driver of the pickup was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

A technical collision investigator at the scene described the crash as one of the worst he has ever seen. Speed is being considered as a contributing factor.

"What we want people to realize is that you are eventually going to arrive at your destination but we need to start slowing down. The majority of the collisions that we are seeing involve speed. If we take speed out of the equation we probably wouldn't have seen such a traumatic event last night," said Constable Ed Sanchuk. "Driving is a privilege, not a right."

The investigation is on-going and charges are expected to be laid.

McDowell Rd. West between Hwy. 59 and East Quarter Line was closed for several hours. It has since been re-opened.
