Sunfest Brings International Music, Food To Victoria Park

Music from around the world will be flowing from Victoria Park into the downtown for the next four days.

TD Sunfest kicks off at 6pm Thursday and runs through Sunday with 36 bands performing on five stages.

"We have musicians from Africa to the Middle East to Latin America, to Europe to the Caribbean -- we pretty much have all corners of the globe here," said Alfredo Caxaj, Sunfest artistic director, who also noted a few London acts will be taking the stage.

In addition to music, the 24th edition of the festival features over 250 vendors, including 65 serving a wide range of food from around the globe.

Roughly 250,000 people are expected to attend the free event over its four-day run, about 50,000 more than last year.

Caxaj believes the multi-cultural aspect of Sunfest is what keeps people interested year after year.

"The difference between Sunfest and the rest of the festivals in this city is that this one appeals to the whole community, not just one particular demographic or cultural background," said Caxaj. "The main objective of the festival is to bring people together and it does that in a very friendly and upbeat environment."

The festival relies heavily on 500 volunteers, many of whom were busy check-in to their assigned posts around noon on Thursday.

"You can have all kind of beautiful ideas but if you don't have the human resources it would be impossible to do it," said Caxaj. "I am grateful for all of the volunteers that make Sunfest the success it is every year."

Wellington St. between Dufferin Ave. and Wolfe St. is closed to accommodate the festival's stages. To see the full lineup of performers click here.
