Cop-Biting Man Resists Arrest

A St. Thomas cop had to be taken to hospital after an enraged man decided to sink his teeth into the officer's arm.

The St. Thomas Police Service said on Friday around 6am, officers were called after a man broke into a home on Balaclava St. and threatened to harm the homeowner. The man fled before officers arrived, but came back to the home carrying two large wooden sticks and threatened police.  One of the sticks, which was about 2 ft long, was thrown at an officer but missed its target.

The men then tried to flee but he was cut off by an officer who tried to arrest him, however, a struggle ensued and the man was able to bite the officer's forearm, drawing blood.  Other officers then arrived and were able to subdue the man, who also spit on another officer.

The man was taken to police headquarters, where he defecated and urinated continuously on the floor and walls of his holding cell.

A 32-year-old St. Thomas man is now facing several charges and has since been remanded in custody following a bail hearing.

The officer who was bitten was treated at Elgin General Hospital for the bite as well as a head wound. He has also started an aggressive treatment program to counteract any possible contagious diseases the suspect might have.
