Leukemia Bottle Drive Returns For Another Year

Fighting cancer this weekend is as easy as returning some empties to the Beer Store.

The 13th annual Returns for Leukemia Bottle Drive runs from 10am to 5pm Saturday.

Spokesperson and Maple Leafs broadcaster Joe Bowen says it's a cause close to his heart because his son was diagnosed with the disease as an infant.

"Sean is now 27 years of age and doing extremely well and he was diagnosed when he was one year old," says Bowen. "I keep saying we're going to beat this -- and small steps they are. If you keep throwing money at this, the people doing the research are doing a wonderful job."

The initiative involves Beer Store employees asking customers to donate all or a portion of their empty beer, wine, and spirit container returns to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

Bowen says last year, the event raised more than $1.8-million for the Society.

"A lot of people are kind of hoarding to bring them back on this weekend, which is a great bit of work," says Bowen. "If you've got a garage full of [bottles], why not do a little housecleaning this week and take them down to the Beer Store."
