There were three deaths and over 10,000 charges laid by provincial police during Canada Road Safety Week.

The Ontario Provincial Police said between May 15-21, officers laid more than 10,600 speeding charges and 175 of those were street racing charges. Both were increases over the same period of 2017.

Provincial officers also laid 726 seat belt charges, 424 distracted driving charges, as well as 124 impaired by alcohol or drug charges.

Police are continuing to investigate a fatal collision that occurred in the OPP's West Region, as well as two other off-road vehicle incidents that claimed two lives in the North East Region.

Canada Road Safety Week is a national campaign aimed at educating drivers through awareness and enforcement about the "Big Four" factors that cause fatal motor vehicle collisions -- impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and lack of seat belt use.
